The tour starts early in the morning in Salta, where you will head towards the town of Gral. Güemes to take the highway leading to the province of Jujuy. Access to Iruya is only possible through the Quebrada de Humahuaca. This excursion bypasses the capital of Jujuy and goes straight into the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Along the way, you will make stops in the towns of Purmamarca, Tilcara, and Humahuaca.
During this part of the trip, you will visit various attractions such as the Cerro de los Seven Colores, the Church of Purmamarca, the Pucará de Tilcara, La Paleta del Pintor, Uquía, the Monument to the Heroes of Independence, and the main squares of each town. There will also be photo opportunities near Maimará and the crossing of the Tropic of Capricorn. After exploring Humahuaca, there will be a detour to the East to re-enter the province of Salta. Along the way, you will pass through the town of Iturbe, which remains despite the abandonment of the railroad long ago.
As you ascend towards the Abra del Cóndor, the highest point, prepare for a winding path nestled in a dry desert landscape. The Abra del Cóndor, situated at an altitude of 4000 meters above sea level, marks the natural border between Jujuy and Salta, offering a breathtaking view of the vast surroundings. From there, you will embark on a descent of 1220 meters in just 19 kilometers, characterized by curves and impressive cliffside views, until you reach the entrance to Iruya.
Upon crossing the Milmahuasi River, which can sometimes hinder access to the town during summer, you will arrive in Iruya. The town unfolds before you, nestled amidst the mountains, showcasing its splendor.
The itinerary includes stops at Jump, Apacheta del Abra del Cóndor (at 4000 meters above sea level), and Iruya. The return journey will take you through Uquía (known for its Cuzco-style paintings), Maimará, “Paleta del Pintor,” Volcán, Tumbaya, Yala, San Salvador de Jujuy, and eventually back to Salta.
