The tour of Salta and the province of Jujuy starts early in the morning. The first destination is the town of Gral. Güemes, where you will take the highway to Jujuy. To reach Iruya, you must enter the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The tour skips the capital of Jujuy and goes directly to the Quebrada de Humahuaca, with stops in Purmamarca, Tilcara, and Humahuaca. During this part of the excursion, you will visit points of interest such as Cerro de los Seven Colores, the Church of Purmamarca, the Pucará de Tilcara, La Paleta del Pintor, Uquía, the Monument to the Heroes of Independence, and the main squares of each town. There are also stops for photo opportunities near Maimará and at the Tropic of Capricorn crossing.
After touring Humahuaca, the tour takes a detour to the East to re-enter the province of Salta. Along the way, you’ll pass through the town of Iturbe, which still stands despite the abandonment of the railroad. As you ascend towards Abra del Cóndor, the highest point, you will experience a winding path through a desert landscape until you reach an altitude of 4000 meters. At Abra del Cóndor, you’ll witness the immensity of the surroundings. From there, a thrilling descent of 1220 meters in just 19 km begins, with breathtaking cliffs and curves in the road. This leads to the entrance of Iruya, a town nestled in the mountains.
The itinerary includes stops at Jump, Apacheta del Abra de Cóndor (at 4000 meters above sea level), and Iruya. On the return journey, you will pass through Uquía (known for its Cusco-style paintings), Maimará, “Paleta del Pintor,” Volcán, Tumbaya, Yala, San Salvador de Jujuy, and finally Salta.
