Uyuni 1 Full day

Highlights

  • Tour from Uyuni
  • Discover the attractions around Uyuni in one day
  • Have fun, we will give you ideas to take incredible photos in the salt flat

Description

Located in Potosi’s Department, Salar de Uyuni is the largest and highest salt desert in the world. Covering a surface area of 10,582 km2 and situated at an elevation of 3650 meters above sea level, it has become a renowned natural attraction. Not only does it showcase the vast expanse of salt, but it also holds the title for the world’s largest lithium reserve. Additionally, Salar de Uyuni has historical significance, as it was once inhabited by the Tiwanaku and Incas, whose remnants can be found on the desert’s islands.

A visit to Uyuni typically includes exploring the train cemetery in the morning. This place holds the history of the railway, which was constructed in 1872 to transport important minerals such as copper, tin, silver, and gold, as well as other raw materials like sodium nitrate. However, with the collapse of the local industry in the 1940s, the train cemetery fell into disuse and is now a popular spot for taking photographs. Afterward, a stop is made in the small town of Colchani, where locals specialize in crafting salt products, textiles, and other goods. Visitors can also visit a small museum showcasing how salt is made edible (optional).

The highlight of the trip is the stunning Uyuni salt flat, where visitors can witness piles of salt, salt sculptures, and even a former salt hotel (now a museum). Incahuasi Island, located within the salt flat, offers not only impressive Inca ruins but also unique flora, including towering cacti. A leisurely walk of approximately 45 minutes leads to a small museum at the end of the island. The trip concludes with a visit to the salt flat’s stunning salt ponds. Once this adventure is finished, visitors will be taken back to the town of Uyuni.
